The Flames scorch the Stars
Supersport.com
Harambee Stars started their Cecafa Tusker Challenge Cup in the worst possible way losing 2-0 to Malawi in their Group C opener at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Monday.
Pililani Makupe and Joseph Kamwendo scored in each half as The Flames registered their second win over the Kenyans in as many matches in the regional tournament.
Malawi are top of the group with three points, followed by Ethiopia and Sudan whose match ended in a one all draw while Stars are bottom with no point.
The loss continued Stars poor run in Cecafa with Kenya having suffered five straight losses in the tourney. You have to go back to the 2009 edition for their last win; a 2-0 win over Somalia.
Coach Francis Kimanzi opted for a mobile front five with Kevin Kimani, Paul Were and Jamal Mohammed supporting Bob Mugalia while Titus Mulama and Collins Okoth shielded the back four.
They started well dominating with Kevin Kimani testing Malawian keeper Charles Swini on 23 minutes.
But then, almost out of nowhere, Malawi took the lead a minute later. John Banda led a quick counter down the left before swinging in an inviting cross that was touched on for Pililani Makupe to volley in from 15 yards.
Stars tried to respond with Kimani volleying Mugalia knockdown wide but the Malawian backline ensured that they were reduced to half chances.
Banda was causing Kenya all sorts of problems and his venomous volley was tipped onto the bar by Duncan Ochieng on 54 minutes.
A rush of blood then saw Kenya concede a second goal as Duncan Ochieng came for a cross but failed to hold onto the ball before inexplicably wrestling Loti Chawinga to the ground to concede a spotkick. Skipper Kamwendo stepped up to make it 2-0 from the spot.
Kenya’s sole attempt on target in the second half saw Mugalia force a save from 40 yards.
If anything Malawi went closest to getting a third with Chawinga somehow failing to turn in a Banda cross from six yards out.

tk, not you again
30 November 2011: Malawi 0:0 Sudan
Supersport: After the match, Malawi coach Kinnah Phiri said he was content with the point, “the games are very tough because of the heat and I commend my boys because they did well today getting us a point. We shall now face our last match confident that we can still qualify for the quarterfinals.”
His opposite number Mubarak Suleiman was angry at the officiating, “I brought some players to Cecafa to condition them for Afcon but the referee was very poor. He only called for fouls against us and this made me angry. For us, it’s not about qualifying but exposing some of our young boys but we need good refereeing.”

The Harambee Stars arrived on Sunday afternoon buoyed by the recent 7-0 thrashing of Seychelles in a pre 2014 World Cup qualifier.
“I am happy all the players are fit and were all busy in the last day of the league giving them an upper hand when we go to the match.”
“Malawi is a very good side and we will not underrate them in anyway but we have to impose a technical and tactical approach to the game to counter their speedy strikers,” Kenya Coach Kimanzi told SuperSport.com.
“We have to begin positively in the first match and my aim is to go all the way to the finals of the since the cup has been elusive for Kenya,” he added.
The Kenya CECAFA Squad includes 3 foreign based players: Dennis Onyango (South Africa), James Situma (Albania) and Jamal Mohammed (Romania). The Malawi CECAFA squad includes only 1 foreign based player: James Sangala (Angola).
By the way, Kenya will host the 2012 CECAFA Senior Challenge. Trying to win it by any means necessary?
Kimanzi blames loss on preparations
“I am not happy with the loss but I as you know we had very little time to prepare as a team as the players had to go back to their clubs for the last league games of the season.”
“The loss should not be a reflection of what we have as a team since I am happy with the players’ commitment during the game. We played well but individual mistakes cost us in the game, “Kimanzi told SuperSport.com.
“I am also trying to build a younger team for the future but we will work on the mistakes and rectify the loop holes,” he added.
“At times you start badly and you get punished but we can improve and I am confident that we will be better in the remaining two group games,” he added.
