We have reached quarter-finals and semi-finals of the tournament in the recent past. We now have to aim high and win the cup, or, at least reach the finals” – Malawi Coach Kinnah Phiri as quoted by Nation Sports last week.

Reacting to Kinnah’s comments, FAM President Walter Nyamilandu said: “It indicates serious signs of his commitment to do well. There’s definitely need for him to rebuild his image as a successful coach having failed to achieve anything in the past two years.”

Added Nyamilandu: “But I am happy that he is also being ambitious and wants to win a tournament, or at least, reach the finals.”

By the way, Kinnah’s 2 year contract was renewed after the Flames failure to qualify for the 2013 AFCON Tournament after losing 2-0 and 1-0 to Ghana because his last 2-year contract was not target-based. Now it will be target-based.

“… the technical subcommittee is supposed to meet this weekend, where among other issues, they are expected to come up with targets for the coaching panel as agreed by the executive committee” – FAM President Walter Nyamilandu as quoted by Nation Sports on Friday.

I wonder what the targets will be. Which one(s) of these should be the target(s)

1. At least make it to the Finals of the 2012 CECAFA Senior Challenge
2. At least make it to the Finals of the 2013 COSAFA Senior Challenge (in May – Hosts Zambia)
3. At least make it to 2015 AFCON Tournament
4. At least make it to the 3rd Round (CAF) of 2014 World Cup Qualifiers

World Cup Brazil 2014 Qualifiers (CAF – 2nd Round) Remaining Fixtures (CAF – Group F):

22-26 Marc 2013: Namibia vs Malawi; Nigeria vs Kenya
07-11 June 2013: Malawi vs Namibia; Kenya vs Nigeria
14-18 June 2013: Malawi vs Kenya; Namibia vs Nigeria
06-10 Sept 2013: Nigeria vs Malawi; Kenya vs Namibia

Group F Standings:
Group F
Only the Group Winners will make it to the 3rd Round.

The action is about to start.

The Ebola report is above is misleading. Luwero is not a suburb of Kampala. It’s a whole separate district. The Kenyans are angry because they wanted to host it themselves but the sponsors chose Uganda.

Sad to hear indiscipline problems in the Flames camp. Total lack of professionalism. That’s what happens when you have a team with no professional role models.

All, joking aside, I hope you have a good tournament.

I think the Ethiopian Team is the strongest even if its the second team to compete. the squad is full of talented young footballers

@Mikyas, Ethiopia’s 1st team would not even make it past Rwanda or Tanzania. So, for you to come here and claim that their 2nd team is the strongest without any idea about the rest of the teams is insane. Or are you informing us that the 2nd team is better than the 1st eleven?

I bet you Zanzibar can beat them.

Try to be objective when making such statements. Talk of blind patriotism.

@ ugandan the first team that you are making fun of will be at the CAN finals. Cecafa tournament is just a bunch of friendly matches.

@ The Ugandan
Say what ever you want but you are not better than the only CECAFA representatives at AFCON 2013. I think Uganda cranes are highly overated. They don’t deserve to be ranked first from CECAFA in the fifa rankings. You will see what I mean when they lose to the 2nd team of Ethiopia infront of their home crowd on Tuesday. Anyways, it is not talking: it’s football.

@Ethiopian & Mishek, you qualify for Afcon via Sudan and you’re already getting pompous? Let’s wait and see what you will do in S.A.

We all know you always struggle at CECAFA.

You will not even trouble our 3rd string team in CECAFA.

I know you guys have not even seen the Ethiopian team in action lately, let alone Uganda. So I’ll go easy on you.

Very unconving win by the hosts yesterday

Eventual winners usually start off slowly. :-)
Remember Spain in SA 2010?

Hopefully, this makeshift Cranes will gel as they progress. A win is a win. :-)

Congrats to Burundi. Somalia and S. Sudan need a lot of work.

The Flames had better pull off an unlikely draw tomorrow because Zanzibar could prove to be a tough nut to crack.

Ugandan, its Rwanda agaínt Malawi tomorrow

@Rahim, I know it’s Rwanda vs Malawi. If Malawi loses this game or have a low scoring draw, they will be in trouble, as Zanzibar is good enough to get a better draw or even 3 points from Rwanda.

Bear in mind that Malawi vs Zanzibar is likely to end in a stalemate. The other scenario depends on who scores the most goals against Eritrea.

@ The Ugandan
Ethiopia is better than Uganda. Our first team can beat Uganda any day, any where. Even Ugandan players that play and used to play here in Ethiopia like Isacc Isende and Sula Matovou know that they can’t beat Ethiopia.
”you qualify for Afcon via Sudan..”
Don’t forget that Sudan were the one that outplayed and beat African Champions Zambia with a 2 – 0 scoreline.

@Ethiopian, look up Ethiopia’s record against Uganda before you type nonsense.

BTW, the same Sudan you mention, lost the 3 points of that game to Zambia and also lost their game against Tanzania yesterday.

Wow! When the big dog is away, the cats will play

Thanks all for your comments and scores updates. Keep it up!

I really don’t get why Ethiopia (World = 102) has to play in the preliminary round against Eritrea to then progress and play Rwanda (World = 122) who are ranked 20 places below them in the fifa ranking. I think Rwanda should have been in the preliminary round to play Eritrea.” – sam | November 22nd, 2012 at 12:16 pm

The draw was held on 6 September. The August Rankings were as follows:

Ethiopia = 122
Rwanda = 125

However, please note that the seeding system used for the draw took into consideration amongst other criteria the teams’ performances during the last two editions of CHAN finals.

Ethiopia pulled out of CHAN 2011. I think that explains why.

Malawi 20 Man Squad includes 10 players with CECAFA experience: The 10 players are: Goalkeeper:Charles Swini; Defenders: Foster Namwera, Steve Chagoma, John Lanjesi, Bongani Kaipa, Pilirani Makupe; Midfielders: Ndaziona Chatsalira, Chimango Kayira, Joseph Kamwendo; Striker: Rodrick Gonani

The 10 debutants at the tournament are Goalkeepers: Owen Chaima, Richard Chipuwa; Defender: Moses Chavula; Midfielders: Patrick Masanjala, Micium Mhone, George Nyirenda, Owen Chaima, Richard Chipuwa, Bernard Harawa, Strikers: Chiukepo Msowoya, Green Harawa and Innocent Bokosi

Steve Chagoma, Innocent Bokosi, Micium Mhone, Patrick Masanjala, Chiukepo Msowoya and Bernard Harawa were expected to arrive in Uganda last night after featuring for their respective clubs in the Carlsberg Cup Semi-Final matches. Malawi Coach Kinnah Phiri said the six players would be available for selection for today’s match against Rwanda.

Of course, it will not be easy for them after jet lag and having featured in tough games on Saturday. We will have to see if they can cope,” said Kinnah.

There is the excuse if the Flames happen to lose today.

wow! Looks like Eritrea means business this time around.
I classify Eritrea as an inexperienced Malawi. Very good MFs but naive/inexperienced players.

The Malawi loss to Rwanda was expected. How they fare against Zanzibar will be the key to their success.
