29 February 2012: Chad vs Malawi (AFCON 2013 Qualifiers)
The Flames haven’t played any match since the Chad 2:2 Malawi match. I don’t take into account the 2011 CECAFA Senior Challenge matches because only local players took part. Almost 100% of Malawi National Team regular players are foreign based.
The Flames are scheduled to play a friendly against the Mambas of Mozambique on 25 February at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, Malawi. Not confirmed yet because the Mambas have requested FAM to meet part of their expenses. The Mambas are expected to use a chartered plane and they want FAM to meet half the cost. By the way, the Mambas will also play a friendly against the Brave Warriors of Namibia on 22 February in Namibia. “Mozambique will fly in with a chartered plane and will leave again directly after the match so we could not arrange the match at another time. But I want to call on the Namibian public to come out and support our team,” Brave Warriors coach Bernard Kaanjuka said yesterday. The Brave Warriors are preparing for the AFCON 2013 Qualifier against Liberia on 29 February, 2012.
In mid-May, Namibia will leave for a 10-day camp in Germany at the Sportschule Kaiserau in Westfalia, where they will prepare for the World Cup 2014 qualifiers. The Brave Warroirs are in Group F along with Kenya, Nigeria and Malawi. Meanwhile, Nation Sports has reported that Malawi will travel to China for a three week camp in April (2nd Week of April – April 27). While in China, Malawi will play against the China National Team and against top Chinese Clubs. The leagues all over the world will not be off-season then so that means only local players will make the trip.
I think that is the disadvantage of having too many foreign based players.
If we can say developed countries are the ones to be cup winners it can be total lie.You can agree with me that some of west Africa countries are not rich as we may think but they are doing well in football . Malawi national team must not hide behind poverty in their losses.Athing is that they do not play with zeal and goal.Unfortunately government adds on their failure by funding not enough money.Always players go into camping too late sometimes when there’s may be five days to go for important match. With this attitude team can not be winning.
It has been painful watching Nations Cup without watching The Flames. Guys please qualify for 2013 CAN.
Rev, you made very good points but let me just address one.
“Always players go into camping too late sometimes when there’s may be five days to go for important match”
Most of the times local players go into camp at least two weeks before the important match. Please note that when the foreign leagues are not off-season, it’s not mandatory for clubs to release the foreign based players earlier than 5 days because of the following rule regarding release of players for International Duty:
(b) for a qualifying match for an international competition: 4 days (including the day of the match). The period of release shall be prolonged to 5 days if the match in question is held on a different continent from that on which the club is domiciled.
I think that’s where the main problem is. Should Malawi National Team Coach go local?
Renard: I learned from Egypt
13 February 2012 – KOZambia coach Herve Renard says his African Nations Cup triumph was anchored on lessons learned from Egypt’s success with domestic players.
Renard’s Championship-winning team was composed mainly of players from the continent, with Congolese club TP Mazembe contributing seven. Others came from South African PSL clubs including Orlando Pirates, Free State Stars, SuperSport United and Zambian clubs.
Only three players in the squad play outside Africa.
“Egypt are the best team in Africa and we had to learn from the best because they won so many times with players from their country.
“But the Zambian league is not at the same level with Egypt, so we had to take players from South Africa and from Congo,” Renard said. “TP Mazembe has seven players from Zambia so it is easy because they understand each other.
“It was easy for us because we started a long and difficult preparation early, which would not be very easy with players from Europe.”
While he rebelled in the triumph of his local contingent, Renard says he would not be unhappy to see them make the grade to Europe.
“They have the talent and they can do well, but they have to plan their careers because it is not easy for Zambian players when they are alone.”
“TP Mazembe has seven players from Zambia so it is easy because they understand each other.” Team Cohesion, Team Cohesion, Team Cohesion.
“They have the talent and they can do well, but they have to plan their careers because it is not easy for Zambian players when they are alone.” Sounds familiar?
If Malawi National Team Coach goes local, sooner or later the local players will become foreign based players. Back to square 1?
Steve, the Zebras (Botswana) were there but do you think they enjoyed watching their team?

Flames’ striker Esau Kanyenda will not be available for the Chad/Malawi match on 29 February. He parted ways with his Russian Club now he is busy looking for another club. It seems he is about to be signed by one of the Angolan clubs.
Other players that will not be available are:
Elvis Kafoteka – Currently in Thailand for trials
Harry Nyirenda – Injury
Meanwhile, Joseph Kamwendo is back from trials in Thailand and Malawi Coach Kinnah Phiri has invited him to join local players already in camp.
“Kamwendo phoned me on Sunday and I have advised him to join camp. He was among outstanding players in the TNM Super League and he needs to be in the team” – Kinnah Phiri as quoted by the Daily Times.

After the 6 1 win in Blantyre, Malawi had gone to Chad with underrating heart, they were surprised to face a different team and the draw eliminated them out of the AFCON qualification. This time around the team is very hungry to revenge with a wider margin rt in Chad to prove a point that Chad is a small team, lets wait for this evening and u will recall this. These guys are the players Kinna planned to take to AFCON but the draw denied them the chance. Its now in their responsibility
to burn Chad to ashes so as never to repeat the insult.

karim, I don’t know why “Malawi went to Chad with an underrating heart”. This is what Kinnah said a few days before the 2-2 draw: “When you look at our first game against Chad, when we beat them 6-2 at home, it was not easy, even if the score was strongly in our favour. You cannot call them a small team because they have some really good players. And at this time of the year we can expect a tough game because I think they will also be using the match to prepare for the start of the World Cup qualifiers. It is going to be tricky.”
Stain, I don’t know what you mean by “update your website properly”.

This is very disapointed stories, why is it so? Our team instead of starting registering a win tikukayamba ndikuluza, it’s very painful to see 2013 AFCON in South Africa we are not there, oh it’s absolutely nonses two times in a roll, FAM please u must send players to camp in right time so that they can have more time for training.
My point is, if we want malawi national team to go to AFCON finals of 2013 we must do the following: [1] Our government must fund the team with huge amount of sum of money not the way it funds now. [2]FAM must employ new coach but from either Europe or America[ Agentina or Brazil]. [3] Kinnah be put on Assistant coach These changes will absolutely make a difference in Malawian soccer. Failing which flames will not qualify for AFCON.
Kondwani, the local players were in camp for about 2 weeks. Not enough time? Don’t you think the local players could have done a better job? What’s the difference between CHAD and CECAFA teams?
REV, based on what you stated, it seems Malawi will not qualify for AFCON 2013.

Malawi National Team (local players only) went into camp last Sunday. Since the friendly against Mozambique will be on 25 February, it seems only local players will feature in that match. I think only two or three local players will start against Chad on 29 February.
About 95% of Malawi National Team regular players are based in South Africa. The leagues in South Africa were on a 2 month break and the second half of the 2011-2012 season will start on 15 February. The clubs will release the players for National Team duty 4/5 days before the match against Chad. Rusty?
