AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS 2012 Draw Procedure
Yesterday the CAF Executive Committee endorsed the final draw of the final phase of the Africa Cup of Nations Gabon/Equatorial Guinea 2012.
The draw will be done as in previous editions. Placement of teams at the head of the different groups will be based on the results of three previous CAN (Egypt 2006, Ghana 2008 and Angola 2010). Points obtained in the 2010 edition will have a coefficient of 3, those of 2008 coefficient 2, and finally those of the 2006 will have coefficient 1.
The winner of each edition scores 7 points, 5 points for the finalist, three points for semi-finalists, two points for quarter-finalists and one point for teams eliminated in the first round.
Here are the rankings of the teams that would qualify if the qualifiers ended today:
1. Ghana
2. Cote d’ Ivoire (Qualified)
3. Zambia
4. Guinea
5. Mali
6. Senegal (Qualified)
7. Morocco
8. Gabon
9. Malawi (Chad vs Malawi)
10. Burkina Faso
11. Sudan
12. Libya
13. Niger
14. Botswana (Qualified)
The pots would look like this:
Pot 1: Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Cote d’ Ivoire
Pot 2: Zambia, Guinea; Mali, Senegal
Pot 3: Morocco, Gabon, Malawi, Burkina Faso
Pot 4: Sudan, Libya, Niger, Botswana

Malawi and Bostwana are capable of making it to the second round if it stayed that way at the AFCON.
tk, Malawi and Botswana could end up in the same group: Cote d’ Ivoire, Zambia, Malawi and Botswana. I don’t see Botswana making it to the second round. Will they make it to the second round with a minus 14 goal difference?

BOTSWANA ASSURED OF AT LEAST ONE POINT IF MALAWI AND BOTSWANA WILL BE IN THE SAME GROUP.
Dipsy1, huh? Just because Malawi and Botswana drew during the qualifiers?

@ sscouser. South Africa is one of the top 10 teams in Africa. Sometimes you call Malawi mighty Malawi but they are not even among the top 10 teams in Africa.
Mike, be easy. Let’s agree to disagree. It seems you rate the teams based on FIFA Rankings. I rate them based on appearances at AFCON Tournaments. When was the last time South Africa qualified (not as hosts)?
Yes, Mighty Malawi.
