Africa Cup of Nations Angola 2010 Draw Held

1251715269-aThe Confederation of African Football (CAF) is currently conducting the draw for the Africa Cup of Nations Angola 2010.

P/S: Draw completed. Scroll to the bottom of this post for results.

The draw generated less discussion among Angolans than an on-going spat between coach Manuel Jose and star Manucho Goncalves. Real Valladolid striker Manucho was dropped from the squad for friendlies against Congo and Ghana after arriving late for training in Portugal. Jose publicly blasted the former Manchester United player, saying he needed to learn respect.

With the exception of South Africa, the rest (Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria and Egypt Algeria) of the six representatives of Africa at the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 will be at the pending Nations Cup finals.

10 of the 16 teams that qualified for Angola 2010 were at the Africa Cup of Nations Ghana 2008. The 6 teams that were not at Ghana 2008 are Algeria, Gabon, Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Togo and Malawi.

The draw event, featuring Congolese artist Papa Wemba and other Angolan singers, is being held at a shiny new glass-and-steel convention centre in the purpose-built southern suburb of Talatona.

Some views about the draw:

Angola Coach Jose Manuel: “I am not thinking about any opponent. I have big respect for all the teams but don’t fear being paired with any of them. For every draw, you will either be lucky or unlucky depending on the outcome.”

Ghana Captain Stephen Appiah: “We are ready for all the teams. Whoever comes our way, we are battle ready and we are not afraid of any of the qualified teams. All the qualified teams went through on merit (hear, hear) and therefore no team would be a walkover”

Malawi Coach Kinnah Phiri: “I hope we won’t be in the same group with Ivory Coast, Egypt or Burkina Faso because that would be very bad for us. If we are drawn against these teams, the problem is that having played them in the qualifiers, they know our style of play. It’s better to play teams that have no idea of our system.”

Draw held. Below are the results of the draw. Click here for fixtures.

Group A: Angola, Mali, Algeria, Malawi.

Group B: Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Burkina Faso.

Group C: Egypt, Nigeria, Benin, Mozambique.

Group D: Cameroon, Tunisia, Zambia, Gabon.

Yes, on paper, Group B seems to be the Group of Death. However, football is played on a pitch and not on paper. I am sure most people think Ivory Coast and Ghana will go through but don’t be surprised if Togo and Burkina Faso go through. Who won the FIFA Under 17 World Cup Nigeria 2009? What were people’s predictions?

Based on the results of the poll so far, it seems most people think Group B is the Group of Death. On what basis?

Group B is definitely the group of death but the irony in this is that, they are neighbors in one way or the other. Ghana is in the middle with Burkina Faso just above her with Togo and Ivory Coast on the immediate left and right respectively. How can this loving become dying rivals but that is soccer. I wish my country Ghana the best of luck.

I would be a lot more scared of the unknown if I were these other teams.I mean look at:

Group A
Malawi,
they have made it to AFCON after being underdogs from the first round of
AFCON look where they are now.Their confidence has definately grown and any team should definately watch out for this team. They are definately proven spoilers.
Algeria
who never made the last AFCON but now not only have they made AFCON but also world cup.
Angola is somewhat in the mix considering that they will be playing at home.Having said that,I must say this group is wide open.

In group B
Ivory Coast and Ghana beware the underdogs.I wouldn’t bet against any team in this group.

In group C
Nigeria might have and advantage since they already played Mozambique in the qualifiers but it might also work to their disadvantage.Benin might be tough to beat. This group is wide open for anyone to go through.

In group D

This is probably the only group where I would place my bet, that Cameroon and Gabon will go through.

in my opinion, Malawi will qualify for the quarter finals. This group is not tough as the one that comprised Ivory Coast, Guinea & Burkina.

Herbert you are forgetting that your team only qualified because of home advantage. Had Guinea played at home against Burkina Faso you wouldn’t have qualified. The only team that you can beat is Angola but Angola being hosts that will be a mountain too high to climb.

Go Ghana Go!
