During the Africa Cup of Nations 1984 Algeria beat Malawi 3-0.
Did somebody say “payback is a bitch“?

Hate it or love it (50 cent featuring The Game):

[Chorus (50 then Game):]

Hate it or love it the underdog’s on top
And I’m gonna shine homie until my heart stops

Go ahead envy me
I’m rap’s MVP (Most Valuable Player)
And I ain’t going nowhere so you can get to know me

16 min: GOAL!!!!! Russell Mwafulirwa (Malawi 1:0 Algeria)
34 min: GOAL!!!!! Elvis Kafoteka (Malawi 2:0 Algeria)

Half Time : Malawi 2 Algeria 0

47 min: GOAL!!!! Davie Banda (Malawi 3:0 Algeria)

Full time: Malawi 3 Algeria 0

Folks, it’s official, the Flames of Malawi are no longer under-dogs.

VIVA COSAFA!

Kiko, could you explain why the stadium was empty
http://www.worldcupblog.org/world-football/if-a-tree-falls-in-an-angolan-wood.html

Is it because your folks expected Algeria to win easily or is it an indirect way of requesting CAF to help you reach the finals? :P

I can’t wait for Angola vs. Malawi

The time of the kick-off (people probably at work) probably affected the attendance.

The price of the tickets are amazingly low (some tickets cost $5), so that is not an excuse.

Fans planning to come to Angola were also probably traumatised by the Togo incident, and there is all sorts of false rumours flying around on the net at the moment about the country.
Add the BBC’s bad publicity and you are left with people steering clear of the venues.

Anyway, Malawi played a great game, I expected a good result but that was too good!

Congratulations sscouser!

It happens almost everywhere (where most people work day jobs). The same thing happened in Kenya during CECAFA 2009. I think the only solution is to play games at night. The drawback with playing games at night is that the hosts can deliberately turn off the power when the host team is losing.

Nairobi — The fourth All-Africa Games soccer tournament semi-final between Kenya’s Harambee Stars and Malawi was brought to a premature end because of a sudden black-out at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, in 1987. The game was replayed and Kenya won.

The soccer tournament was won by Egypt. It was the first Games in which the host country did not win, although the host Kenya finished second. Malawi won their first All-Africa medal (Bronze). Malawi beat Cameroon 3-1 for third place. During the Group stages Malawi beat Egypt 2-1 (It’s a habit).

With Malawi leading 1-0 and pressing hard for another goal, the stadium was plunged into darkness following power failure, leaving the referee with no alternative but to call off the clash amid protests by the Malawians who claimed there was foul play to save the home team.

(what about in U.S?). The other drawback is that the floodlights are too costly.

How come the stadium was filled to capacity (Ivory Coast vs Burkina Faso). Drogba?

This is what we need strong teams in the southern part of Africa. Malawi has totally transformed its soccer and we as Zambia know them we used to beat them easily but it is no longer the case we lost to them not too long ago. Its for those who dont them to get a shock of their lives. Angola watch up!

The Ivory Coast v Burkina Faso game was held in Cabinda and was slightly later on in the day (5pm in angola).

Drogba visited the country last year and his popularity certainly increased.
But I think that if they played in Luanda at the same time as Malawi did, the stadium would still be empty.

A great victory for Malawi. It will get harder from them from here on out but they are certainly capable of upsetting Mali as well. Angola may be too much to ask because of the crowd and motivation factor but then again they lost a 4-0 lead.

What result do you consider to be greater sscouser: this win or the Egypt win?

OFCOURSE THE EGYPT WIN….That was the turning point for Malawi after beating the AFCON champs….The Algeria win was good coz it might just come down to goals scored inorder to advance to the next round.

I am lost for words, but I think whatever Kinnah touches, turns gold.Remember Bullets. I do not know what commentators like Mark Gleeson who do not respect Malawi at all are thinking now. Malawi wooyee! That was out of this world. You cannot take out anything away from us!

Even if the competetion ended today we are proud with what we have achieved, beating a world cup team is not easy. And the margin is very surprising though sweet like dwangwa sugar!!!

Iam sure this has given us more confidence and Angola is next with their porous defence on thursday

Congratulations Malawi here from Denmark. Malawi has twice been in training camp in Denmark, both times arranged by the former head coach Kim Splidsboel (2001 – 2002)
Kim Splidsboel commented on the match on Eurosport and he was fantastic happy and proud to see Malawi play so intilligent and technically impressive. Great credit to all players and coaches he knows and all of whom were in their younger years when he was coach. Good luck in the coming matches.

Ladies (Dareen, Naphiri and Love?) and Gents, I am humbled. Thanks for your congrats and comments.

“What result do you consider to be greater sscouser: this win or the Egypt win?”

Which Egypt win are you referring to? The 2-1 in Kenya or the 1-0 in Malawi?

Blame it on the heat: (”Blame it on the rain” – Milli Vanilli)

Algeria coach Rabah Saadane claimed after the loss to Malawi that his side’s poor showing was partially down to the weather. The humidity and heat were too much for his players, he complained afterwards, but when pressed he did not offer an explanation as to why he decided to prepare in the chilly south of France rather than in tropical conditions more akin to those in Angola.

That should be a lesson to all teams that will take part in the World Cup South Africa 2010. The teams will need to camp in South African countries: Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, etc.

We’ll be glad to host them in the Warm Heart of Africa (Malawi).

sscouser: The win 1-0 in Malawi this World Cup qualifying round.

I agree with TK that the 1-0 win was the turning point. That’s when we got our mojo back.

However, the 2-1 win was the one that hurt them the most. After the game they vandalized the dressing room. Mad because they lost to under-dogs?

The Algeria win is also huge. I understand we made 80 million Egyptians happy. It’s also huge because it was Malawi’s first win ever at Africa Cup of Nations. In 1984 Malawi and Nigeria drew 2-2, Ghana beat Malawi 1-0 and Algeria beat Malawi 3-0. Revenge is sweet.

“By taking revenge, a man is but even with his enemy; but in passing over it, he is superior.” – Sir Francis Bacon (1561 – 1626)
