Back to the international friendly between Malawi and Uganda: “The federation felt it was important to organise a high profile international friendly for the Cranes as they prepare for the important clash against Zambia in the AFCON 2013 qualifiers and everything has been confirmed. Coach Bobby Willimanson will be meeting with the technical committee to name a squad to play the match,” Cranes Media officer Fred Katende told SuperSport last month.
On 1 August Uganda Cranes Head Coach Bobby Williamson named 25 players to report for training today in preparation for the international friendly match against Malawi. The 25 man squad includes three U-20 players (Nicholas Wadada, KCC’s Joseph Ochaya and Geoffrey Kizito) – impressed the coach during Uganda Hippos’ 3-1 win over Ghana’s Black Satellites in the 2013 Africa Youth Championship qualifier a week ago.
The rest include Denis Onyango, Hamza Muwonge, Ali Kimera, Massa Simeon, Guma Denis, Andrew Mwesigwa, Kalungi Henry, Isinde Isaac, Owino Joseph, Walusimbi Godfrey, Ochaya Joseph, Oloya Moses, Wagaluka Dan, Mawejje Tonny, Kizito Geoffrey and Wasswa Hassan. Others are Bengo Steven, Matovu Sula, Massa Geoffrey, Umony Brian, Okwi Emmanuel, Ssentongo Robert, Hamis Kiiza, Sserumaga Mike and Nicholas Wadada.
Uganda Cranes started preparations this Wednesday (today) ahead of an international friendly match against Malawi scheduled for August 15 in Blantyre.
Head Coach Bobby Williamson was in charge of the training session held this morning at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. Four professional players, Hamis Kiiza, Isaac Isinde, Mike Sserumaga and Hassan Wasswa attended the training.
The team will however travel without some of its key players due to either club commitments or injuries. Among the notable absentees will be team Captain Andy Mwesigwa, Goalkeeper Denis Onyango, Geoffrey Massa and Brian Omony. Moses Oloya’s fate will be confirmed by end of tomorrow (Thursday).
FUFA however wishes to clarify that August 15, a date set for the Malawi friendly match is not considered an international FIFA day for friendly matches in Africa. The date was traded with June 16 of this year by CAF. Upon this background therefore, clubs have the right to retain the players for club duty.
We are however making all the attempts to sweet talk some clubs to release the players. Abel Dhaira and Tonny Mawejje will connect directly to Malawi while Johnson Bagoole and Emmanuel Okwi are expected on Thursday. Wagaluka arrived Wednesday afternoon.
Last week Malawi National Team Coach Kinnah Phiri released names of locally based players expected to go into camp this week.
Goalkeepers: Charles Swini; Richard Chipuwa; Amadu Ali
Defenders: Foster Namwera; Bongani Kaipa; Francis Mlimbika; Pililani Makupe; John Lanjesi; Steven Chagoma; Patrick Masanjala; George Nyirenda; Mustafa Salimu
Midfieders: Chimango Kayira; Frank Banda; Douglas Chirambo; Ndaziona Chatsalira; Peter Pindani; Patrick Gunde; Joseph Kamwendo
Strikers: Gabadihno Mhango; Green Harawa; Boniface Kaulesi; Vincent Chinthenga; Innocent Bokosi; Macius Mhone.
All the named players (except “prodigal son” Douglas Chirambo and rookies Vincent Chinthenga, Mustafa Salimu, Patrick Gunde and Macious Mhone) were part of the squad that was in camp for the friendly match against Zambia on 6 July (Malawi 1:0 Zambia) – Malawi Independence Day.
Douglas Chirambo used to be in Steven Constantine’s first 11 about four years ago but he was never called again after Kinnah Phiri took over.
Vincent Chinthenga (Bvumbwe Research F.C.) is the leading scorer (SUPER League of Malawi). By the way, where is Ishmail Thindwa? Last season’s top goal scorer?
Update (9 August 2012):
This group of local players can do wonders. Kinnah should try to field only locally based players against Ghana.
Lucas, don’t forget that the first leg (against Ghana) will be played in Ghana.

FAM cancels Uganda game amid fears of Ebola
Daily Times (9 August 2012)
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has cancelled the Flames international friendly against Uganda Cranes for fear of Ebola virus escalation.
General secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said the cancellation of the game follows Ministry of Health officials’ recommendation.
“The Football Association of Malawi would like to inform you that the friendly match involving Malawi and Uganda which was slated for 15th August 2012 at Kamuzu Stadium has been cancelled on advice from the Government following the escalation of Ebola disease in Uganda. The Government has since advised Fam to identify another team which at the moment is not a health risk to our nation,” a statement from Nyirenda said.
“This is a big blow in our preparations for the showdown against Ghana in the 2013 Afcon qualifiers in Accra on 8th September 2012. Fam has since engaged other Football Associations on the possibility of a friendly match but due to time factor, Malawi will not play a friendly match on 15th August 2012. Any new developments in as far as the Flames preparations are concerned will be communicated to you all.”
Surprisingly, Confederation of African Football (Caf) has allowed Uganda Under-20 national team to travel to Ghana for Africa Youth Championship second leg against the hosts.
Uganda National Television health beat reporter Florence Namuyimba also said in a telephone interview from Kampala that the situation was under control.
“Actually, the situation here is just fine. There haven’t been any new cases of the Ebola at all. All those infected have been quarantined and it’s really not an issue at all now,” she said.
“There is no need for such fears. Life is just normal here and if that’s what has happened there then things have been blown out of proportion.”
The Flames were set to host the Cranes in an international friendly next week Wednesday.
Nyirenda however, said the national team would still be in camp as they search for another sparring partner.

Malawi was just scared of being beaten at home and FAM didn’t have the money, so to save face, they came up with this excuse.
The Ugandan…, I think someone is being economical with the truth.
“They are telling us they are facing financial challenges. So it is true the game is off,” FUFA spokesperson Rogers Mulindwa, who dismissed talk that the game was called off due to Ebola fears, told SuperSport.com in an earlier interview.

The Flames have missed an opporunity to test their readiness for the match against Black Stars. This would have been a chance for Kinnah to assess captain Peter Mponda and other professional players.
Samul (Samuel?), the Flames can still play a friendly match if they want to. Can’t they play a friendly against a local club? Also, the Malawi U-17 is also in camp so why can’t the two play against each other? A friendly match is a friendly match.
As for Peter Mponda, he ruled himself out of the AFCON 2013 final qualifiers against Ghana. Late last month he underwent another knee surgery and doctors recommended that he should be out of action until November.

So Malawi didn’t play any friendly game? Too bad. They needed a quality game before Ghana.

The Ugandan…, Malawi will play against Ghana on 8 September so there is still time to play at least one international friendly before then. I don’t think they would have benefitted much from the friendly against Uganda because 1) only locally based players would have featured (foreign based players will be named next week), 2) the match against Ghana will be played away (in Ghana), 3) …
By the way, when did you come back from welcoming the 2012 Olympic marathon gold medal winner Ugandan Stephen Kiprotich? Your government needs to stop funding football
It’s just a waste of taxpayers’ money. But seriously, …

@ sscouser, you’re a joker!
Ugandan government barely funds football. If they did, the Cranes would be talking about playing Germany in a friendly, not Malawi.
The Ugandan…, I thought you chose to play a friendly against Malawi not because you didn’t have enough funds but because you think Malawi and Zambia play the same way.
“I think it is good that we are having a friendly (against Malawi) before that very important game against Zambia (AFCON 2013 Qualifiers),” said Cranes skipper Andy Mwesigwa.
“It will help us get a feel of what to expect in Zambia especially that this friendly is also away.”
Really? The friendly was going to be played on Wednesday so I think the stadium would have been almost empty. Your match in Zambia will be in a fully packed stadium. Be afraid, be very afraid
By the way, Germany doesn’t play friendlies against lowly ranked teams like Uganda
No wonder you are playing a friendly against Botswana this Friday. The Zebras will teach you a thing or two on how keep the bus parked in place
