The ones in Green have made it to the round of 16 (knock-out phase). Though the ones in Light Yellow are still in danger I think they will also make it to the round of 16. Germany will need to beat Honduras (Group A). A draw will kick out both of them. If Germany win then Honduras are out but Germany have to wait for the results of final games in the other groups. If Honduras win then Germany are out but Honduras have to wait for results of the final games in the other groups.

The top two teams from each of the six groups automatically qualify for the knock-out phase. The four best third-placed teams, from the six groups, will also progress to the round of 16. To be among the four best third-placed teams a team needs at least 4 points but sometimes even 3 points can be enough. During the FIFA Under 20 World Cup Egypt 2009, Nigeria made it to “Sweet Sixteen” after ending up as one of the four best third placed teams. They had 3 points from 3 games (1 win and 2 losses).

Which of the following teams currently with no point do yo think will win their last game and make it to the round of 16?(polls)

October 30 Results:

GROUP A
Nigeria 2:1 Argentina. Both Nigeria (7 points) and Argentina (6 points) are through
Germany 3:1 Honduras. Germany (4 points) through. Honduras out.

Germany are through because they will end up as one of the 4 four best third placed teams. Why? Because of the following:
1) They have more points than the third placed Team (Brazil 3 points) in Group B
2) They will have more points or a better goal difference than the third placed Team in Group E. Since U.A.E will play against U.S.A., one of the teams will either end up with 3 points (if the team loses) or 4 points if a draw. If a draw then Germany will have a better goal difference than the third placed team in Group E.

GROUP B

Mexico 2:0 Japan. Mexico (6 points) through. Japan out.
Switzerland 1:0 Brazil. Switzerland (9 points) through.

Brazil (3 points) have to wait for the final results in Groups C, D, E and F to see if they will finish as one of the four best third placed teams.

October 31 Results

GROUP C

Gambia 2:2 Colombia. Gambia out
Iran 1:0 Netherlands

GROUP D

Burkina Faso 4:1 Costa Rica. Costa Rica out.
New Zealand 1:1 Turkey

The following teams have made it to the round of sixteen:

Ist and 2nd placed Teams:

1. Nigeria (Group A 1st)
2. Argentina (Group B 2nd)
3. Switzerland (Group B 1st)
4. Mexico (Group B 2nd)
5. Iran (Group C 1st)
6. Colombia (Group C 2nd)
7. Turkey (Group D 1st)
8. Burkina Faso (Group D 2nd)
9. Spain, U.S.A. or U.A.E (Group E 1st)
10. Spain, U.S.A or U.A.E (Group E 2nd)
11. Italy, Korea Republic or Uruguay (Group F 1st)
12. Italy, Korea Republic or Uruguay (Group F 2nd)

4 best third placed teams:

13: Germany (Group A, 4 Points)
14. New Zealand (Group D, 3 Points but with better GD than Brazil/Netherlands)

15 Brazil/Netherlands/U.A.E/U.S.A/Korea/Uruguay
16. Brazil/Netherlands/U.A.E/U.S.A/Korea/Uruguay

If U.A.E. vs. U.S.A and Italy vs. Uruguay will end in a draw then Brazil and Netherlands are out. If one or two of the three teams (U.A.E.; U.S.A.; Uruguay) will lose then Brazil and Netherlands will still have a chance. Also, they will have a chance if Algeria will beat Korea Republic.

For Malawi to be put into the Group E (3rd place) equation they must beat Spain by say 3 goals and hope that either U.S.A or U.A.E. lose. Or, they should beat Spain by say 1 goal and hope that U.S.A or U.A.E. lose by say 3 goals. Since Brazil and Netherlands have 3 points each and a goal difference of -1 each, Malawi must beat Spain by at least 2 goals to be considered as one of the now 2 best third placed teams.

For Algeria to be put into the Group F (3rd place) equation they must beat Korea Republic by a wider margin and hope that Uruguay lose. Or, they should beat Korea by say 1 goal and hope that Uruguay lose by say 3 goals. Since Brazil and Netherlands have 3 points each and a goal difference of -1 each, Algeria must beat Korea Republic by at least 2 goals to be considered as one of the now 2 best third placed teams.

Never say never?

Brazil and Netherlands are tied on everything. Who will go through if only one has to go through?

FOUR BEST THIRD PLACED TEAMS TIE-BREAKER RULES

The first determining factor is points. The second is goal difference. The third is the number of goals scored. If, at this stage, teams are still level, then Fair-Play ranking will be used as the third criteria. This ranking is as follows: -1 for yellow card, -3 for a red card (straight or 2 yellows in the same game), -4 in case of a yellow card followed by a straight red card in the same game. And if the teams are still even at this point, a drawing of lots will determine the qualified team(s).

The drawing of lots, if needed, will take place later today in Kaduna at 21h30 local time.

In case of Brazil and Netherlands, if one of them has to go through it seems there will be drawing of lots because they are also tied on Yellow Cards (6 yellows each). However, I don’t know if they will take into account Fouls Committed. Brazil committed 55 while Netherlands committed 44.

November 1 Results:

GROUP E

Spain 4:1 Malawi. Spain through. Malawi out
U.S.A 1:0 U.A.E. Both are through

U.A.E. are through because they have less yellow cards than Brazil/Netherlands. Now there is only one of the four best third placed teams spot left. If Uruguay will beat Italy or draw then Brazil and Netherlands are out. If Uruguay will lose by 1-0 and only receive one yellow card (no red card) then Brazil and Netherlands are out. If Uruguay will lose by 2 goals then Brazil/Netherlands may still have a chance. They may also have a chance if Algeria beats Korea Republic by 2 goals.
