FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 draw

2010fwcoe180x180dpi_6493_sq_mediumInitially, the release date for the November 2009 FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking publication was November 11, 2009. FIFA had to postpone the publication release date to November 20, 2009 so the final matches (played on November 14 and 18) could be included in the calculation for November rankings. The November rankings will be used to determine the seeds for the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 draw.

P/S 2 December 2009: FIFA has decided to base the seeding on the October 2009 FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking only.

P/S 3 December 2009: FIFA WC South Africa 2010 draw and rankings

P/S 4 December 2009: FINAL DRAW:

Group A: South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, France
Group B: Argentina, Nigeria, South Korea, Greece
Group C: England, United States, Algeria, Slovenia
Group D: Germany, Australia, Serbia, Ghana
Group E: Netherlands, Denmark, Japan, Cameroon
Group F: Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand, Slovakia
Group G: Brazil, North Korea, Ivory Coast, Portugal
Group H: Spain, Switzerland, Honduras, Chile

Group of death is an informal sobriquet used in football and other team sports to describe a situation that often occurs during the group stage of a tournament (such as the first round of the World Cup), where:

-more teams are perceived to have the potential to advance past the group stage than the tournament structure allows;

-all (or an unusually large proportion) of the teams present in one group are considered to be roughly equal in skill;

-one or more of the underdog teams plays in a style which may shock a better team.

The key element is that any team could plausibly qualify and any could plausibly be eliminated, or at least one strong team will not advance. It is, in other words, the most unpredictable group of the tournament

Without taking into account FIFA Rankings, which one do you think is “the group of death”?(surveys)

P/S 2 December 2009: FIFA has decided to base the seeding on the October 2009 FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking only. In the past (including 2006 World Cup), seedings were determined by a mixture of world rankings and performances in past World Cups. FIFA has used the October rankings only just to make sure that France were not seeded because of the “Hand of Henry“. Never mind Jérôme Valcke, Fifa’s general secretary. Valcke denied that the controversy surrounding France’s play-off with the Republic of Ireland was a factor in the decision. He added: “We made the decision last month that the October rankings would be used because they were fairer – countries who had been involved in the play-offs would have had an unfair advantages because they would have played more games and that affects their rankings.” Fine but why did FIFA postpone the release date for the November 2009 FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking publication from 11 November to 20 November if they knew that they would use October rankings? It seems the decision to use October rankings was made after the France/Ireland game on 18 November 2009. “I was born at night but not last night.”

P/S November 22, 2009: Final Draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ – note to media

The detailed criteria to determine the seeded teams for the Final Draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ will be confirmed at the next meeting of the Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup™ in Cape Town on 2 December 2009 (and announced at a press conference following the meeting).

If the criteria to determine the seeded teams were to include, as in the past, the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, then it would be the October 2009 edition of this ranking which would be considered, and this for sporting reasons. In fact, using the November 2009 edition would create an uneven situation, specifically for the European Zone, where the play-offs involving the eight best runners-up led to an imbalance in the number of qualification matches played between the teams.

Based on October rankings

Pot 1 (seeded teams): Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Spain
Pot 2 (rest of UEFA): Denmark, Greece, Netherlands, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland
Pot 3 (AFC + OFC + CONCACAF): Australia, Honduras, Japan, Korea DPR, Korea Republic, Mexico, New Zealand, USA
Pot 4 (CAF + rest of CONMEBOL): Algeria, Cameroon, Chile, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Paraguay, Uruguay

Possible draw (using random.org):

Group A: South Africa, Serbia, USA, Uruguay
Group B: Argentina, Slovakia, Australia, Ghana
Group C: England, Portugal, Mexico, Paraguay
Group D: Brazil, Netherlands, Honduras, Cameroon
Group E: France, Greece, Korea Republic, Nigeria
Group F: Italy, Denmark, Japan, Chile
Group G: Spain, Slovenia, New Zealand, Algeria
Group H: Germany, Switzerland, Korea DPR, Côte d’Ivoire

I am happy that Algeria qualified because they know how to defend. Teams that don’t know how to defend don’t do well at the World Cup.

Wait, isn’t Netherlands third in the FIFA rankings?

Sam, because it also matters how they performed in former World cups. In 2006 the Netherlands lost in the last 16 and in 2002 they didn’t even qualify.

Ah, I see. Total bullshit. Can’t wait to experience the reactions if France gets an easy group.

Please note that the post has been updated. Go to the bottom of the post. There is a new “possible draw” and poll based on October rankings.

Spain is the most dangerous team for Slovenia. I would prefere South Africa, Germany or Italy. Slovenia can play against this teams very well.

What we should expect to be confirmed at the next meeting of the Organizing Committee for the FIFA World Cup™ in Cape Town on 2 December 2009 (and announced at a press conference following the meeting):

Whether or not they will use November or October rankings. Also, whether or not there will be a special pot. World Cup 2006 Serbia-Montenegro was put in a special pot because of its low ranking (47th). To avoid having a group with three European nations, Serbia-Montenegro was placed in a group with Argentina, Brazil or Mexico. The teams that have qualified for 2010 World Cup include Korea Republic, ranked 52 and Korea DPR (North Korea?) ranked 84. The hosts are ranked 86. Will there be a special pot or special pots?

World Cup 2006 pots (and December 2005 Rankings)

Pot One (seeded teams): Argentina (4), Brazil (1), England (9), France (5), Germany (16), Italy (12), Mexico (5), Spain (5)

Pot Two: Angola, Ivory Coast (42), Ghana (50), Togo (56), Tunisia (32); Ecuador (30), Paraguay (35); Australia (48)

Pot Three: Croatia (20), Czech Republic (2), Netherlands (3), Poland (22) , Portugal (10), Sweden (14), Switzerland (35), Ukraine (40)

Pot Four: Iran (19), Japan (15), Saudi Arabia (33), South Korea (29), Costa Rica (21), United States (8), Trinidad and Tobago (50)

Special Pot: Serbia-Montenegro (47)

2006 World Cup Draw:

Group A: Germany, Costa Rica, Poland, Ecuador
Group B: England, Paraguay, Trinidad & Tobago, Sweden
Group C: Argentina, Ivory Coast, Serbia & Montenegro, Netherlands
Group D: Mexico, Iran, Angola, Portugal
Group E: Italy, Ghana, United States, Czech Republic
Group F: Brazil, Croatia, Australia, Japan
Group G: France, Switzerland, South Korea, Togo

The FIFA Organising Committee approved today the procedure for the Final Draw of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, which will be held in Cape Town on Friday 4 December. The seeding was based on the October 2009 FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking (it seems FIFA just wanted to make sure that France were not seeded because of the “Hand of Henry”)and Brazil, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Argentina and England are therefore the seven squads that join hosts South Africa as seeded teams for the Final Draw.

The committee also approved the composition of the other pots as well as the procedure for the final draw:

• Pot 2 will be composed of teams from Asia (Australia, Japan, Korea DPR, Korea Republic), North, Central America and the Caribbean (Honduras, Mexico, USA) and Oceania (New Zealand)

• Pot 3 will include teams from Africa (Algeria, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria) and South America (Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay)

• Pot 4 will have the remaining European teams (Denmark, France, Greece, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland)

• hosts South Africa will be automatically positioned as A1; the other seeded teams will be drawn into the other groups B-H, but will always be in position “1” of their group

• groups will be drawn from A to H and the positions in the group will be drawn for Pots 2 to 4

• geographical criteria will also be respected, meaning that no two teams from the same confederation will be drawn in the same group (except European teams, where a maximum of two will be in a group). For example, South Africa cannot play the African teams from Pot 3 and Argentina and Brazil cannot be drawn against the three remaining South American teams.

Please note that the post has been updated.
