POSSIBLE GROUPS FOR MALAWI

October 14th, 2008 | By: sscouser | 9 Comments »

SEEDS FOR FINAL GROUP STAGE
POT 1: Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast
POT 2: Guinea, Morocco, Tunisia, Mali, Algeria
POT 3: Burkina Faso, Gabon, Zambia, Kenya, Benin
POT 4: Rwanda, Togo, Mozambique, Sudan, Malawi

The teams in POT 1 will be heads of each of the 5 groups. By being top seeded they get the luxury of not having to play against another top seeded team.

Here are some of the possible groupings for Malawi:

Group 1
Cameroon
Algeria
Benin
Malawi

Group 2
Egypt
Guinea
Burkina Faso
Malawi

Group 3
Ghana
Algeria
Gabon
Malawi

Group 4
Nigeria
Algeria
Kenya
Malawi

GROUP 5
Ivory Coast
Mali
Zambia
Malawi

Group leaders will qualify for the world cup. Given the above, which group do you want Malawi to be in?

The Group leaders will qualify for the World Cup. The top three teams will qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations. Angola will take part in the Africa Cup of Nations as hosts but I expect them to perform poorly because they wont play any competitive matches until 2010.

Malawi are in top form and I expect them to make it to Angola and possibly to South Africa. Why not? If Malawi managed to beat Egypt 1-0 and DRC 2-1 what could stop them from beating Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria or Ivory Coast? Watch Out!

Malawi would have the best chance in group 3….the hardest groups would be 2 or 4

I can’t see Malawi making it to the World Cup. Being in pot 4 makes it incredibly tough. They don’t get 6 free points this time like they did in the last stage.

What happened to Senegal? The same may happen to the teams in Pot 1. Malawi didn’t get free six points (assuming you are talking about the two wins against Djibouti). Malawi beat Egypt and DRC 1-0 and 2-1 respectively so I don’t know which free 6 points you are talking about.
Didn’t Arsenal lose to Hull? Anything can happen. Luck and form go together.

I’m talking about the free points from Djibouti. I know they dropped off in terms of runner ups but no points will drop off here. Malawi’s six points from DRC and Egypt were hugely immpressive. That said I don’t think Malawi’s road form is good enough to win a group. I think they can definitely make the Nations Cup but the World Cup is likely out of reach unless they improve on the road. If they are to make the World Cup I feel they have to draw Algeria and Gabon who I see as the two weakest sides in pots 2 and 3. Anyone other than Algeria in pot 2 makes the task much harder as Algeria are clearly the weak link. I really hope Malawi make the Nations Cup for the record.

Shane, the weakest in POT 2 is Guinea. Am sorry, I forgot that Guinea is your team: http://guinea.worldcupblog.org/

Algeria are the weakest in Pot 2. It has nothing to do with who I blog for. Algeria has been dormant for pretty much the entire decade. While Guinea have had a resurgence this decade.

Now we are on the same page Shane. Algeria used to be a “big” team but now it’s just a name. Big teams are consistent. Yes Guinea have stepped up their game. Let the the best teams qualify for the WC/ACN. Senegal are are out because they are not good enough (at the moment). They would have ‘misrepresented’ Africa had they qualified. Best teams always find ways to top their groups.
